Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: A Mindful Approach to Achieving Your Goals

Mar 18, 2023

Last week, I shared my thoughts on how to manage the emotions that come with imposter syndrome. This week, I was asked how to actually and tactically let go of negative thoughts because it's easier said than done. Here's a framework that has worked for me. This can be used to reframe your thoughts, reprogram your mind, and set intentions to achieve your goals, whether you're dealing with imposter syndrome or any other challenge.

Set Your Intention with Mindfulness

Start by setting your intention to show up! Give yourself permission to try something challenging, even if you're not sure how to proceed. Achieving any goal starts with a firm decision and intention.

Honest Self-Reflection (works best with journaling)

Grab a journal and ask yourself what you truly want without limitations or expectations. Journaling helps you tap into your deepest desires without holding back. Consider prompts such as, "What do I really really want, if there's no limit, no expectations, and if I can't mess it up, what do I want? If no one will get mad at me, and if I am not afraid of anything, what do I want?"

Say Hello to Your Ego and Negative Thoughts

While setting your goals, your ego will likely chime in with discouraging thoughts like, "You're not qualified, that's impossible, that's not practical," etc. Recognize that these negative thoughts as self-doubt, and thank your ego for protecting you but you've got it from here.

Counter Your Ego And Establish New Beliefs To Reprogram Your Mind (works best with journaling)

Reconnect with your purpose and remind yourself why your goals are important to you. Use journaling to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. Imagine the fantastic things that will happen once you achieve your goals, like helping more people and inspiring those around you. Write down the feelings and thoughts you'll experience as you visualize your new reality, and hold onto them as motivation.

Seek Support with an Open Heart

Don't be afraid to ask for help from friends, family, or a coach, but only from those who can offer encouragement. Surround yourself with a supportive tribe that aligns with your goals and fosters positive energy. Be very mindful with words from those that might put you down unintentionally, set your boundaries.

Show Up, Practice Gratitude, and Visualize Success

Achieving goals requires not only effort, but also gratitude for the journey. Be kind to yourself along the way. Make it a daily habit to visualize the feelings and experiences you'll have once you achieve your goals, and recognize small wins. See it, feel it, and believe it to reinforce your belief in your ability to succeed.

To sum it up, overcoming imposter syndrome or any challenge requires work. More specifically, inner-work to reframe your thoughts, and reprogram your mind. Journaling and visualization are powerful tools that can help you tap into your inner power to manifest your goals.

Having a coach is not a necessity, but an investment in yourself. They can provide a shortcut to achieving your goals, instead of trial and error on your own. They can provide valuable support when you are making significant changes in your life. But with so many coaches available, how do you find the right one for you? Here are some suggestions to consider when searching for a coach: Have you identified your needs? What specific areas do you want to focus on with a coach? Do you want to make a career transition, improve communication, or get a promotion? Identifying your needs will help you find a coach with the relevant experience and expertise. Do they understand what it takes to achieve your goals? Check their credentials and ensure they have relevant experiences that are aligned with your needs. For example, I have experience in Product Management in startups and big tech companies so I can help with interview prep and navigating complex organizations, but I can't help with entrepreneurship. While coaches should have relevant experience in your field, not every former experienced professional makes a good coach. Look for coaches who have a strong track record of helping others achieve their goals. Ask for references or to speak with past clients to get a sense of the coach's effectiveness and style. This will give you valuable insights into what it is like to work with them and whether they are the right fit for you. Are they able to connect with you on a personal level? Schedule an intro call and find out. They need to pay attention to your emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and general well-being to individualize communication and motivation that are specific to you. Do you feel comfortable with the coach? Can you feel a connection and rapport with them? How does their energy feel? Do you feel their positive attitude and enthusiasm? Are they able to motivate and inspire you? In addition to an intro call, read their previous articles to get a sense of their personality. I hope these tips are helpful.
